Judicial reforms in Poland

For more than a year, Poland’s ruling government has been facing protests due to the controversial judicial reforms recently introduced in the country.  Law and Justice (PiS), a conservative right wing party and  the most popular among politics, as been strongly  criticized by within Poland and internationally for enabling the ruling government to effectively take control of the country’s Supreme Court.

On the other hand, Polish Prime Minister  declared that Poland had a right to get rid of the remains of the communist system in its judicial system. He argued that judges are “now more independent than they were earlier”.The European Court of Justice (CJEU) is investigating if the recently adopted legislation on the retirement age of Polish Supreme Court judges complies with EU law.
