Ukraine's refugee exodus in Poland
Since the beginning of 2022, rumors of a possible invasion of Ukraine by Russia was in the air. By February 2022, I started to follow the deployment of US troops to Poland and photographed the military bases by the Ukrainian Polish border. On February 23rd, 2022, I spent time with the US 82nd airborne division's new base, just a few kilometers from the Ukrainian border. While overnighting in Przemysl, I woke up with the invasion news. On February 24, 2022, Russia began a large-scale invasion of Ukraine, with explosions reported in multiple cities and far outside the restive eastern regions held by Russian-backed rebels. Throughout the next 50 days, I worked on a long assignment for Getty Images, documenting the refugees' arrivals, relocation, and integration in Poland. Throughout the following months, millions of refugees who fled from the invasion arrived in Poland. Until July 2022, more than 3.5 million refugees are housed in the Central Eastern country.
