On October 22nd, Poland’s politicized Constitutional Tribunal ruled in favour of a ban on abortions in cases of fetal defects, tightening Poland’s restrictive abortion laws even further. The decision means that abortions will only be permitted in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s health is at risk. Ignoring the threat of prosecution and the dangers posed by a surge of coronavirus cases, women and pro-choice protesters staged the largest demonstrations in the country since the fall of communism in 1989. As a consequence, Poland’s right-wing government delayed the publication for more than 3 months, but on January 27, 2021 it was published in the Journal of Laws.
